Out in a rainy clifftop gale in it and was 'fine' then I will have to go with the xmid as I know 100% that will cope well. Re your comment on being close to the canopy though my reading of the specs are that both have similar length with the Durston being lower? I was really thinking about the long sides of the shelters. With the Durston you have mesh protecting you both sides. With the z-packs you have a long back wall you are close to. And of course as has been pointed out, the z-packs is a shallower slope at each end. Another to consider would be the Tarptent Aeon? #18 Yeah that is on my shortlist..... It is cheaper by about £150 and barely heavier. The others I considered were the liteway illusion and GG The One - both of which reduce the price and increase the weight over the xmid Once you are going up to those sort of weight of the Illusion You might as well stay with the xmid solid for better performance and double wall. #19 You will have more space in the xmid due to offset poles, Than single pole and if you are used to setting up an xmid, is say go for the xmid pro. #20 Just seen that the other one on my list was the HMG Mid 1 - 476g. I think that of all the 1 pole options (plex solo, bonfus solus, liteway illusion, aeon li) this might be the closest competitor to the xmid for me. Only 36g heavier, virtually the same price, footprint similar - 22cm longer 23cm narrower - and the chance to try something a little different... #21 UK really does have some challenging conditions doesn't it. If you insist pitching on a highest point within 10 miles, then yes. A little bit of creativity, and it's fine. #22 I don't mean it in that sense I mean it as in we can have frost, 15 degrees sun then a thunderstorm in the space of 24hrs #23 I don't mean it in that sense I mean it as in we can have frost, 15 degrees sun then a thunderstorm in the space of 24hrs That's absolutely standard situation, especially in a mountains with a bit more prominence than British hills. You can go from Arctic desert to subtropics in one day (went from Advantage. Price is also similar enough not to be a consideration. The extra porch on the xmid is also not much of advantage as I only put my shoes outside anyway so don't need the space. In short I know the xmid pro would be fine for UK conditions and for me in terms of space and ease of set up, but is it worth taking the risk on the zpacks for the sake of 100g? If the plex solo lite is warm, weatherproof and sturdy then yes. If not then no.Final point is that my intended use is long distance hiking in the UK. For 2025 that would be the West Highland Way in April and the SWCP in June / July. Also my base weight on the Pennine Way this summer was 7kg but I overpacked slightly and would be looking at a sub 5kg base weight next year - so the 106g difference between the 2 tents is perhaps not completely insignificant I think you answered your own question really.I'd be happy with the XMid pro for 100% of any weather conditions you might encounter on the trips you mention. I wouldn't be so confident with the Plex solo just by it's more open design. Also think about how much closer you are to the canopy if it's high condensation conditions.I've had almost as bad high wind and horizontal rain conditions whilst on the North Cornwall part of the SWCP in August, as any I've experienced camping on mountains. #4 UK really does have some challenging conditions doesn't it. #5 UK really does have some challenging conditions doesn't it. Not challenging... fun & 'educational' #7 I think you answered your own question really.I'd be happy with the XMid pro for 100% of any weather conditions you might encounter on the trips you mention. Yeah, as I was typing it out I realised I was answering my own question. My only 'actual' question is am I right in assuming the plex solo wouldn't cope with UK conditions as well asxmid 1 pro : r/DurstonGearheads - Reddit
#1 I am going back and forth on this so would like some insight particularly from any plex solo lite owners in the UK..... I am wanting to reduce my base weight by getting an alternative to my xmid 1 solid which I love (and will keep). I am drawn to the plex solo lite mainly for the weight, but also for the fact it's a chance to try a different tent (have used a dyneema Stealth before but never a single pole mid design). My concerns however are with it's weather proof capabilities given that it seems to pitch quite high (although presumably it can be pitched low as well?) and that the doors merely overlap (Dixie's bad experience in Iceland with the Duplex overlapping doors springs to mind...) The other concern I have is with how 'warm' it would be given the gap between the bottom of the fly and the ground and the fact it is suggested to pitch with a door open to help mitigate condensation. The extra draughtiness could perhaps be an issue? If I am having to bring a warmer quilt, or even bivvy, to keep myself warm and dry inside then the 100g weight saving over the xmid is instantly lost. The smaller 'niggle' is wondering whether the thinner dcf and guys on the 'lite' might be pushing it too far (less durability / opacity and less holding power respectively)The number of pegs to set up is not an issue as would always bring 10 anyway for the xmid in case everything needs pegging out and the footprint is almost identical between the two. I also hike with 2 trekking poles so using only 1 to set up is also not an advantage. Re your comment on being close to the canopy though my reading of the specs are that both have similar length with the Durston being lower? #8 Haven't used either of these tents, but I would definitely want a tent that I could rely upon in bad weather if I were doing the WHW in April, or the SWCP at any time!Regarding the 1.3mm guylines - I had a look at the spec and they have a breaking strain of 200lb (90kg), so I wouldn't worry. #9 Bonfus solus? Bonfus Solus 1P Ultralight 1 Person Tent | 495g Trekking Shelter The Bonfus Solus 1P tent is one of the most versatile and ultralight tents in the world. Using revolutionary materials and innovative design, this tent weighs under half a kilo while maintaining comfort and reliability for long-distance hikes. Built on minimalist principles, it strips away... valleyandpeak.co.uk Yeah that is on my shortlist..... It is cheaper by about £150 and barely heavier. The others I considered were the liteway illusion and GG The One - both of which reduce the price and increase the weight over the xmid #10 For the reasons you cite I'd regard the X-Mid Pro as the more suitable option. It is very spaceous so nice to relax in after a long day, and the overlapping doors on the Plex are less than ideal in windy conditions. I have not seen the Plex, but the quality of construction and attention to detail on the X-Mid Pro is very high, which is reassuring for a tent made of such an expensive material. #11 There's a thread about the Tarptent Aeon Li going at the moment, and Tarptent are about to have a sale.... #12 Haven't used either of these tents, but I would definitely want a tent that I could rely upon in bad weather if I were doing the WHW in April, or the SWCP at any time!Regarding the 1.3mm guylines - I had a look at the spec and they have a breaking strain of 200lb (90kg), so I wouldn't worry. Do with diameter so much as the linelocs used....... And yes, knowing I am in something 100% reliable is worth more comfort than not having an extra 100g on my back! #13 Regarding the 1.3mm guylines - I had a look at the spec and they have a breaking strain of 200lb (90kg), so I wouldn't worry. I may eat my words some time, but I regard breaking strain of guylines as irrelevant, as almost any line will be stronger than a staking point or some other element of a tent.In my experience most line only fails when it is abraded, particularly in linelocs, so it is worth keeping an eye on this and trying to select a line that doesn't slip / abrade in linelocs or other hardware used. #14 Re your comment on being close to the canopy though my reading of the specs are that both have similar length with the Durston being lower? Even if they have similar length the usable length may be rather different: the twin poles of the X-Mid create a lot of space and height at the ends of the tent, compared with the low walls near the ends of the Plex. #15 For the reasons you cite I'd regard the X-Mid Pro as the more suitable option. You can go from Arctic desert to subtropics in one day (went from
2025-04-25Advantage. My only 'actual' question is am I right in assuming the plex solo wouldn't cope with UK conditions as well as
2025-03-27#1 I am going back and forth on this so would like some insight particularly from any plex solo lite owners in the UK.....
