(WNCN) — Animal care experts at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher have been taking care of some new temporary residents over the last few weeksSix green sea turtles and one extremely rare and endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle are currently being treated at the aquarium after being stunned by the sudden drop in water temperatures last month. They arrived on Jan. 14 and are still being cared for by the Fort Fisher team as of Feb. 3.“Cold-stunned sea turtles become lethargic and eventually are unable to swim, causing them to float at the surface or wash up on beaches and in some cases drown,” Stephanie Dwyer, assistant husbandry curator at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher said in a news release on Jan. 16.Rehabilitation of the turtles includes warming them up and ensuring they can swim and lift their heads comfortably out of the water to breathe, the aquarium said. They are also given a variety of food as well as fluids, antibiotics, eye drops and wound care as needed.“Rehabilitation for a cold-stunned sea turtle can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months, depending on their health status when they arrive,” NCAFF aquarist Andrew Johnson said in the Jan. 16 release. “We work closely with our veterinary team to administer individual care as each turtle is affected differently by cold-stunning. All the turtles we received are stable and eating and just need to continue gaining weight before we release them.”On Monday, the aquarium confirmed the seven turtles placed into their care in mid-January are still being rehabbed and will be returned to the ocean once they get the green light from the veterinary team.Before being released, a small passive integrated transponder tag will be placed in the left shoulder muscle of each turtle, the aquarium said. That number is then archived in a database maintained by the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research and can be referenced if the turtle strands in the future.If the turtles are cleared for release this winter, NCAFF will partner with boats that can help release them in warmer waters offshore.During the winter, members of the public who see a turtle on the beach or in the water that is sluggish or not moving are asked not to put the turtle back into the ocean or to try to move it themselves. Instead, the animal should be reported to the Sea Turtle Stranding Hotline.
